About Fernlume

A small studio and a lump of clay

Fernlume is a handmade studio. We sculpt mushroom night lights and small clay figurines by hand, one piece at a time, and we only start making a piece once someone has ordered it. Nothing sits in a warehouse waiting for a buyer — every piece we build already belongs to somebody.

We keep the studio small on purpose. It means the hands that shape a mushroom cap are the same hands that paint it, wire it and pack it, and that a piece can be fussed over until it is right rather than pushed along to hit a number. It is a slower way to work. It is also the only way we know how to make something meant for one particular person.

What we make

Our night lights begin as clay. We shape the caps and the stems, sand them, paint them, and set them under a glass dome with a warm LED behind the scene. Lit, they give off a low, honey-colored glow: the kind of light you leave on in a hallway or beside a crib, not the kind you read by.

Alongside the lamps we sculpt figurines — couples, families, whole small households standing shoulder to shoulder, and pets with their own particular ears. For our pet memorial pieces we also work in wool felt, needle-felting a portrait fiber by fiber until the face is the right face.

Made from your photos

Most of what we make is personalized. You send us a photo — a dog with one white paw, a grandfather in his good shirt, a name for the base — and we build the piece around it. There is a note field on every personalized product page for those details, and after checkout we email you to collect the photos themselves. Nothing goes into production until we have what we need from you.

Because every piece is sculpted by hand, no two come out identical. A cap leans a little differently, a speck of paint lands somewhere new. We think that is the whole point of a handmade thing.

Made to order, so it takes a little time

Handwork takes the time it takes. Your piece goes into production once your personalization details are confirmed, and we confirm your production and delivery timeline in your order emails so you always know where things stand. How an order moves through the studio, step by step, is on our Shipping Policy page.

Come say hello

We read our own messages. If you have a question about a piece, an idea for a custom order, or a photo you are not sure will work, write to us at support@fernlume.com and we will write back.
